I'm an experienced photographer already equipped with DSLRs (EOS 30D, EOS 5D MKII), but these are not always pratical when you are travelling or biking (I do both on a regular basis). I try to take my DSLRs as often as possible with me but but there are occasions when I don't want to be bothered by the bulky cameras. At the same time, having already invested significantly in DSLR equipment, I wanted to limit my investment. A G10 or G11 would have been nice but for what I wanted to do, it would have been an overshoot. I'm mainly using my A1100is for candid pictures or pictures of places I know I will be coming back with my DSLRs later. Overall, I'm happy about quality of the pictures. I rarely use the full resolution, I typically shoot with medium resolution as I will rarely print large pictures (I have my DSLRs for that).

- optical viewfinder (not many point and shoot cameras at this price range still has an optical viewfinder)

What I'm missing:

When I bought my 40D last Feb., I bought the Canon 100mm USM f2.8 macro lens, but even at that time, I wished for a L-series IS macro. I love macro photography, but usually find myself in situations where I don't want to mess with a tripod. I couldn't understand the arguments against having an IS macro lens. When I am hiking or in a botanical garden with many people and space restrictions, I want to take the pictures free-hand. Great focus and beautiful bokeh. The weight and length of the lens makes it very portable. The only "down side" is the speed of the focusing system. I guess in macro photography this isn't something you really have to worry about, but I did miss 2 opportunities to capture crisp pictures of some birds because by the time the lens focused, they had moved.

This is my third Lumix. We have a more expensive LX-2 -- top of the line in its time -- which is an excellent almost-pocketable camera. I also bought a cheaper FZ-28 for hiking, which is disappointingly noisy. This camera is /very/ nice for what it is. It's smaller than I expected, which is a good thing. It's also lighter than I expected. It's not a tank, like some of the Olympus cameras. [I'm neutral whether that is good or bad.] It tends to flare some since the lens is covered by a piece of flat glass with no sun shade, but as long as you watch where the sun is, that's not a big problem. I have gotten it wet while hiking but haven't yet taken it underwater. There are lots of YouTube videos from people who have. I expected the door for the battery and SD card to have some kind of lock on it (like the Sanyo waterproofs) so one doesn't accidentally open it underwater. If someone made a camera condom for this model, I'd probably use it just to cover the door. It exposure brackets only +/- 1 E.V.; I'd prefer 2 so I could shoot HDRs when the situation requires it.
But it takes _wonderful_ video. The raw video on a large screen television is gorgeous. It has a nice wide lens, adjusts focus and exposure quickly (and in small increments). I use AVCHD Lite with a Mac. The first time I used it as a videocam was at a dog show. I posted the results on YouTube under "Beck - Best of Breed." Most recently I shot "Moanalua Valley Trail - After the Rain" with it. I'm very pleased with its macro capability too. I bought the green color; it's subtle and doesn't look cheap or industrial. I recently got a D300s for shooting pictures of my 3-year old. Previously, I used a Nikon D70, a 6-megapixel DSLR. I honestly think that the D70 is a fine camera and takes beautiful pictures if you use good lenses with it, but I got the D300s because it is much faster at focussing (51 focus sensors vs. 5 focus sensors), and can snap pictures at 7 frames per second (versus 4 frames per second for the D70). So now I feel I'm getting great pictures of my fast-moving daughter that I probably would have missed with my older camera. As for the quality of the pictures themselves, I don't notice any significant improvement from the D70, which already produced excellent pictures as long as things were moving slowly enough for it to lock focus.

The bottom line is this: If you're often dealing with fast-moving subjects, then the very fast focus and the machine-gun like 7 frames per second capability of the D300s will maximize your chances of getting good shots. The reason to get this camera is for its SPEED. That's what you're paying extra for when you buy this camera over a lower-priced Nikon SLR. I use this ballhead primarily for landscape photography and I am very satisfied with it. It easily holds my Canon 1D MkII N with a 100-400L zoom lens with no problem. It has very little sag, and once you set it, it STAYS in place. The one recommendation I would have is to reverse the trigger mechanism to the left instead of the default (right handed) position. If you do this, it is easier to change the position of the head with your left hand and at the same time still have your right hand free to manipulate the shutter and most of the controls which are on the right side of all major DSLR brands of cameras. If you're a novice at photography and want to take pictures either out of or under water, you couldn't ask for a bettter camera. Especially for the price. Either the people who gave this camera a bad review didn't know how to use it, they have too high a expectation, or are expert photographers who may need a more expensive camera. And that the camera is only good for 3 meters under water. So I wasn't able to swim to the bottom of the ocean with it to take pictures. I had to stay on the surface. Purchased this camera just before going on vacation. I was a little worried about response time from clicking the button to taking a picture because of past cameras. I have been impressed with other Samsung products, so I decided to give it a try. So far I have been impressed.

The response time has been great. The exception to this is when using the flash or digital image stabilization. Both of these features can cause a delay. Otherwise it is quick to capture the picture and then the screen stays blank while it processes. This is better than some of my other cameras that blanked the screen before capture.

I have been very impressed with the image quality in well lighted areas. With the flash, indoors works well with the tendency to blur, and that is why the image stabilization is nice. Used these cameras to take snorkeling pics on The Big Island of Hawaii. For such a simple, low cost product applied for it's intended use it works really well (within limits). OK, it does not have a shutter speed adjustment so it won't work for all applications. 800 speed film is needed for the reduced lighting you deal with under water but there will be some level of graininess. The quality of your image will be limited by a) movement (yours and your subject's) b) available light, c) water clarity, d) water depth, e) distance to image.

From my (limited) experience the best results will be obtained shooting a non-moving subject on a bright sunny day in clear water at a depth of no more than 5-6 feet from no more than 5-6 feet from the camera. The more variables introduced, the lower quality of the picture. You can see some of my results in the user images that I posted (#15-20).

NOTE: Kodak has a special printing process for underwater photography marketed as "Sea Processing". It it's intended to improve the print quality by tweaking color, contrast and so on. I've seen some impressive results posted online. However, these were processed by Wolf Camera and are unaltered from what they delivered on the CD. I may end up sending my negatives in for Sea Processing but most of the pics were fine with the processing by Wolf.

So, under the right conditions you can take some nice pictures with this product, just be aware of the limitations ahead of time to avoid disappointment. :)

I have had these binoculars for about 1 year now and I still bring them basically anywhere I go. So for a C: drive it performs well only if you clear free space every other hour

This is a fairly standard projector bulb, contained within a massive cage. This adds a lot of cost and waste. I am comfortable handling projector bulbs, so next time my TV needs a new bulb, I will find the naked bulb somewhere and insert it into a reused cage.

Like many of you, I looked all over the internet in order to find a hood for my 50mm 1.4. As you all know, they range in price by a lot. I was a little nervous jumping in the ocean the first time with my new camera but a dozen times in the water and NO PROBLEMS. The underwater picture quality was a treat after years of trying to use disposable underwater cameras- it was FUN to take pictures and videos underwater. This camera has many, many menu settings and I was a little nervous that I would change a setting inadvertently but so far, I am finding my way around the menus and features without any problems. The manual is a bit confusing, as are all camera instruction manuals that I have ever had.

I wish it had a viewfinder, it only has a display screen.

So far I have taken about 500+ pictures and find this camera fun and somewhat intuitive to figure out having had an Olympus Stylus before this one. The computer software takes some figuring out- I am still working on that part.
