First of all, I'm a beginner photographer, and I wasn't totally convinced that I should buy a lens hood. But everywhere I look, people seem to recommend buying one, so I went along with the consensus.

Without further ado, here are my thoughts on this Canon lens hood:

0) It was fifty bucks. For a piece of molded plastic lined with felt on the inside. But it was well-engineered piece of plastic. The hood twisted on and off the lens *very* smoothly. I would expect off-brands to not get this feature perfectly right.

1) It makes your camera look bigger and bulkier. This is good if you're try to show off your pro-photographer-ness, bad if you're trying to not draw attention. Note that the hood can be put on the lens backward, which save space when the lens goes into a bag.

2) It blocks light from the sides, as designed. Well, it is most effective at wide angle. At telephoto, the hood leaves the lens wide open on the sides. This is because the hood blocks a constant *field of view*, and the field of view decreases as you zoom in. In fact, the only lens whose hood adapts correctly with the focal length is the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L lens. That lens gets *longer* at wide angle and shorter at telephoto.

3) I heard that a lens hood can protect your lens from dirt, and can also take the blow when the lens is dropped. For the former, I think a UV filter is much preferable. For the latter, I hope to never think about it. I just don't trust my lens and camera being dropped, period! I don't believe that a piece of plastic will be enough to reduce the impact.

4) It's really a shame that the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 lens didn't include the hood. It is practically an L-lens in terms of image quality and especially cost. We bought this camera in April of 2009, the camera had problems recording video so we exchanged it for a new one in May. Now, it won't interface with my computer and is being listed as an "Unknown Device," on 3 separate computers. I tried 3 separate cords, and that didn't work.

I called their customer service. Which there is none in the Continental US. It is all based out of the Philippines, they don't speak or understand English that well and I had to repeat myself 2-3 times each time. When someone is already upset about their product they shouldn't have to repeat themselves 2-3 times to explain what the company should have had right in the first place.

Every time they transferred me I got hung up on. I called 5 times and had to repeat my problem to 3 separate people, then every time they either transferred me or I tried to escalate me call I was disconnected or hung up on all 5 times. This took a total of about 3 HOURS. Not one of the people I spoke to created a case number for me to reference, even though I asked. It was like I never existed.

So I went online to try their online chat, that is also based in the Philippines, I spend about 1 and a half hours trying to get them to understand that the problem wasn't software related, or the cord but they kept on transferring me around. At the end of the hour and a half, the tech told me to go to another online site and arrange for repair, myself, after going through the process on that site, it popped a message up to contact customer service again. Finally I went on the step-by-step repair site and used a problem that wasn't related to the problem that I had with my camera. "Broken part (button, cover, dial, door, switch, latch, knob, camera screen)" and finally got to a send for repair screen.

I contacted Kodak, the executives to report the problem via their email addressed I found online. Of course they didn't respond.

Don't buy any Kodak products unless you feel they will work perfectly. This camera was the second one of the same model that failed, when the store could no longer exchange the product I had to deal with Kodak. For a company that does the most of it's business in the US and is based in the US, you would think that they could have a customer support center in the US. I wasted 5 hours trying to get my camera repaired. Terrible customer service makes the already faulty camera, even worse.

This is a great video camera for the money. It will fill up your big screen with pretty good quality video. I can't comment about the stills because I use a digital camera for photos and never took a picture this camera. This is a great little umbrella adapter that makes entry into advanced lighting very painless. It offers all of the flexibility and adaptability one could hope for at a great price. The light metal shoe mount is threaded onto the 1/4" male stud, and the male and female studs are reversible with 1/4" and 3/8" threads. The longer lever in the product image controls the tilt and can operate like a ratchet in case your lighting rig is in the way somehow.

The weakness in the design is the plastic screw and fine, shallow threads for the umbrella holder (all other threads are metal). This screw could be over-tightened, stripping the threads in the swivel bracket. Be careful and you're okay--my umbrella hasn't exactly fallen out of the bracket yet! The overall build is acceptable. Considering the cost of most photographic equipment, at this price the build is exceptional. I wonder just how much better a more expensive bracket can be.

Bought binoculars as a compromise for a Safari trip to Kenya - wanted good quality and light weight but not at a price where I would be neurotic about loss or damage. For all you consumers out there, I bought a Pentax FAJ 70-300, to see if it was as good as some of the reviews. This lens got a sort of mixed rap, but, it takes much better pictures with my k10d than the Sigma. The Sigma manual focus was tight in spots as it articulated, but it seemed to function properly.
I set up my tripod, mounted the camera and took pictures with just changing lenses, than going to my computer to 'see' if the Pentax was indeed just a cheap film lens, not digital dedicated, with no redeeming money advantage. Wrong. Although, the Sigma lens arrived in a box that was big enough to let the lens box bounce around with absolutely nothing for packing, it may have been damaged in shipment. So maybe the lens is OK, and it was damaged in shipment or???? The FA turned out much clearer and sharper than the Sigma in a fair test, but maybe the Sigma was damaged. If it was not damaged, it sure was not worth the money. I did not want to spend the money to check this inexpensive lens for optics and the electrics of the motor. I took manually focused, and automatic. I found the Sigma wanting. I try to spend my money where it goes the furthest. I'm an experienced photographer already equipped with DSLRs (EOS 30D, EOS 5D MKII), but these are not always pratical when you are travelling or biking (I do both on a regular basis). I try to take my DSLRs as often as possible with me but but there are occasions when I don't want to be bothered by the bulky cameras. At the same time, having already invested significantly in DSLR equipment, I wanted to limit my investment. A G10 or G11 would have been nice but for what I wanted to do, it would have been an overshoot. I'm mainly using my A1100is for candid pictures or pictures of places I know I will be coming back with my DSLRs later. Overall, I'm happy about quality of the pictures. I rarely use the full resolution, I typically shoot with medium resolution as I will rarely print large pictures (I have my DSLRs for that).

- optical viewfinder (not many point and shoot cameras at this price range still has an optical viewfinder)
- slow shutter speed flash mode

What I'm missing:
- no aperture priority mode where I can choose a precise f-stop

When I bought my 40D last Feb., I bought the Canon 100mm USM f2.8 macro lens, but even at that time, I wished for a L-series IS macro. I love macro photography, but usually find myself in situations where I don't want to mess with a tripod. I couldn't understand the arguments against having an IS macro lens. When I am hiking or in a botanical garden with many people and space restrictions, I want to take the pictures free-hand. I was in heaven when Canon announced the new L-series macro, and after about 1 1/2 months waiting, it finally arrived on Friday, and I took it out for a drive immediately. The pictures are awesome! Great focus and beautiful bokeh. The weight and length of the lens makes it very portable. The only "down side" is the speed of the focusing system. I guess in macro photography this isn't something you really have to worry about, but I did miss 2 opportunities to capture crisp pictures of some birds because by the time the lens focused, they had moved.

This is my third Lumix. We have a more expensive LX-2 -- top of the line in its time -- which is an excellent almost-pocketable camera. I also bought a cheaper FZ-28 for hiking, which is disappointingly noisy. This camera is /very/ nice for what it is. It's smaller than I expected, which is a good thing. It's also lighter than I expected. It's not a tank, like some of the Olympus cameras. [I'm neutral whether that is good or bad.] It tends to flare some since the lens is covered by a piece of flat glass with no sun shade, but as long as you watch where the sun is, that's not a big problem. I have gotten it wet while hiking but haven't yet taken it underwater. There are lots of YouTube videos from people who have. I expected the door for the battery and SD card to have some kind of lock on it (like the Sanyo waterproofs) so one doesn't accidentally open it underwater. If someone made a camera condom for this model, I'd probably use it just to cover the door. It exposure brackets only +/- 1 E.V.; I'd prefer 2 so I could shoot HDRs when the situation requires it.
But it takes _wonderful_ video. The raw video on a large screen television is gorgeous. It has a nice wide lens, adjusts focus and exposure quickly (and in small increments). I use AVCHD Lite with a Mac. The first time I used it as a videocam was at a dog show. I posted the results on YouTube under "Beck - Best of Breed." Most recently I shot "Moanalua Valley Trail - After the Rain" with it. I'm very pleased with its macro capability too. I bought the green color; it's subtle and doesn't look cheap or industrial. It's rugged enough that it gets used a lot. Although I bought a second battery, the battery for this camera is not a skinny little toy. I've never had an issue with the first battery running down but I tend not to use a flash.
I'd recommend this camera if you regularly do any kind of outdoor activities and take an extra second or two to see where the sun is relative to the camera. I recently got a D300s for shooting pictures of my 3-year old. Previously, I used a Nikon D70, a 6-megapixel DSLR. I honestly think that the D70 is a fine camera and takes beautiful pictures if you use good lenses with it, but I got the D300s because it is much faster at focussing (51 focus sensors vs. 5 focus sensors), and can snap pictures at 7 frames per second (versus 4 frames per second for the D70). So now I feel I'm getting great pictures of my fast-moving daughter that I probably would have missed with my older camera. As for the quality of the pictures themselves, I don't notice any significant improvement from the D70, which already produced excellent pictures as long as things were moving slowly enough for it to lock focus.

The bottom line is this: If you're often dealing with fast-moving subjects, then the very fast focus and the machine-gun like 7 frames per second capability of the D300s will maximize your chances of getting good shots. The reason to get this camera is for its SPEED. That's what you're paying extra for when you buy this camera over a lower-priced Nikon SLR. If, on the other hand, you don't need the high speed (e.g., landscape and scenery pictures), then get a D40 or D90 and use the money you save on a good lens. I use this ballhead primarily for landscape photography and I am very satisfied with it. It easily holds my Canon 1D MkII N with a 100-400L zoom lens with no problem. It has very little sag, and once you set it, it STAYS in place. The one recommendation I would have is to reverse the trigger mechanism to the left instead of the default (right handed) position. If you do this, it is easier to change the position of the head with your left hand and at the same time still have your right hand free to manipulate the shutter and most of the controls which are on the right side of all major DSLR brands of cameras. Its not quite a Kirk, Really Right Stuff or Acratech head, but then again its way cheaper than those brands. It provides acceptable performance at a fraction of the price of those heads. A little large but in my opinion its performance outweighs its slightly bulky size. If you're a novice at photography and want to take pictures either out of or under water, you couldn't ask for a bettter camera. Especially for the price. Either the people who gave this camera a bad review didn't know how to use it, they have too high a expectation, or are expert photographers who may need a more expensive camera. Or perhaps their camera just didn't work properly.

I wasn't expecting a lot from this camera based on the price and some reviews, but because of some of the shared photos, I decided to give it a try. If it didn't work, I at least didn't spend a whole lot. What I got was an amazing camera for a great price. I'm an extremely picky person and it takes a lot to impress me, but that is exactly what this camera did. Since I was snorkeling and floating on top of the water bobbing up and down, fighting against the current and using mostly the zoom feature my expectation was a lot of blurred pictures. So much so, that I wasn't even eager to get back to the ship to load the pictures onto my laptop to see what I got. When I finally was mentally set for a big disappointment I loaded my pictures onto my laptop. What I saw couldn't have surprised or excited me more. The pictures were beautiful and the movies I took were phenomenal. If you are a novice or a intermediate photographer, I highly, highly recommend this camera especially if you want to take underwater photos. I think it does great out of the water too. I have uploaded a few of the pictures I took so you can check those out. My two disappointments were that it was overcast (Fugifilm has no control over that)and I think some of the photos would have been better had the sun been out showing off all the colors of the fish and coral. And that the camera is only good for 3 meters under water. So I wasn't able to swim to the bottom of the ocean with it to take pictures. I had to stay on the surface. Regardless, it had the zoom that worked perfectly. Product will play only part of the pictures in the memory card (up to 1005 images), while all other images are ignored.

Great tack sharp lens. Its got some weight to it, which I prefer. All that is missing from this lens is a metal bezel and a little more environmental protection. I purchased this product as a newbie. I read quite a few reviews and discussions as to whether or not it's needed. I keep it on my 17-55 lens most of the time for protection sake. I honestly can't say that I notice any difference when it's on or off. It is a bit of a hassle taking it off (unscrewing it) and replacing it with another filter. It's not something that happens instantly, so hopefully there's no hurry when you're making the change. This is a fine case for the Canon SX1 IS. I use it mostly for storage and not for transport. It will not accommodate the camera with the lens hood on. If you need a case to keep your camera from getting dusty this will work just fine. I would not rely on it as the sole protection bouncing around in a pack.
